Destia has secured the western section of the Vantaa tramway construction project in Finland
On November 26, 2025, the city of Vantaa signed the agreement to form alliances responsible for building a tramway. The alliance formed by Destia, Colas' Finnish subsidiary, and its partners has secured the contract for the western section of the line. Destia has received the service order for the first phase of the project, worth approximately €230 million.
The alliance responsible for constructing the western section comprises Destia, a subsidiary of the Colas Group, engineering and consulting companies Sitowise Oy and Ramboll Finland Oy, as well as the project's customers, the City of Vantaa and the Helsinki Region Environmental Services Authority (HSY). Helsinki is represented by the company Pääkaupunkiseudun Kaupunkiliikenne Ltd. This section, which will connect the Helsinki Airport and the Tikkurila
District, also includes the construction of a tunnel under Tikkurila railway station, which will remain operational throughout the tramway construction period.
The construction phase is expected to last four years, with commissioning scheduled for late 2029. The total value of the tramway project is estimated at around €750 million. Destia's total share is estimated at around €420 million.
Destia has received the service order for the first phase of the project, worth approximately €230 million, which will be added to the order backlog in the 4th quarter of 2025. This amount covers preparatory work, foundation construction, roadworks and municipal engineering, structural elements, as well as the tramway superstructure in certain geographic zones along the line.
In addition to laying the tracks, the work includes the redevelopment of road structures (traffic lanes, bicycle paths and pedestrian crosswalks), as well as the renovation of all underground networks (water supply, other pipes and cables).
The Vantaa tramway is an LRT line that will connect the easternmost districts of the city to the railway network and provide easy access to Helsinki Airport. This is a major project that will transform the urban landscape of Vantaa and enhance mobility, provide a cleaner means of transport and improve the quality of public transport connections in the Helsinki metropolitan area.
This tramway is the largest investment ever made in Vantaa and is a major urban development project. The city's goal is to attract 60,000 new residents and create 30,000 new jobs along the line by 2050.
"The Vantaa tramway is a strategic project for us, enabling us to leverage our expertise in railway construction in a demanding urban environment. This tramway will streamline cross-town traffic, and we are also delighted to be promoting public transport and the ecological transition in Vantaa", says Tero Kiviniemi, CEO of Destia.
This is the second public transport development project that Destia has secured in the country, after the one linking Kalasatama to Pasila.
"This new public transport construction project secured by the Colas Group in Finland once again demonstrates the expertise of Destia's teams and our Group's ability to deliver major infrastructure projects in the countries where we operate", says Francis Grass, Executive Vice President EMEA (Europe, Middle East, Africa) at Colas.
The completion of this project will make Vantaa the fourth city in Finland to have a tramway.
