Colas, TotalEnergies and Volvo are joining forces to support the decarbonization of urban construction sites
On May 20, 2026, during the 8th edition of the Rencontres event organized by the Community of Sustainable Equipment Stakeholders (CAMD) at Nanterre in France, Colas, TotalEnergies, Volvo CE and Volvo Trucks signed a partnership agreement to speed up the energy transition in the construction industry and support the decarbonization of urban construction sites by means of multi-energy solutions.
One of the first projects involves a trial on construction sites in the Lyon area, using a mobile electric charging unit designed to meet the practical and specific needs of urban environments. This solution will be tested by teams at the Colas Group’s Saint-Priest site and will enable electric machinery and vehicles to be charged while minimizing the use of diesel and petrol generators.
TotalEnergies will draw on its expertise in supplying low-carbon energy and in door-to-door delivery as close as possible to Colas’s worksites in order to optimize energy availability in urban areas. The Volvo entities will contribute their expertise in electric and connected vehicles and construction machinery, while Colas will bring its experience as a construction site operator, particularly in densely-populated urban environments.
This partnership will complement the other initiatives already under way between Colas and TotalEnergies on other projects, such as the use of HVO-type biofuels for the diesel fleet, the installation of charging infrastructure powered by electricity from guaranteed renewable sources, and the development of Colas’s existing land through the installation of solar power plants that contribute to the energy self-sufficiency of its sites.
This new collaboration is consistent with the partners’ ongoing commitment to reducing the carbon footprint of their own operations and those of their customers.
"By bringing together Colas, TotalEnergies, Volvo CE and Volvo Trucks to develop mobile charging solutions and electric machinery, this partnership marks a new milestone in the decarbonization of urban construction sites and is in line with Colas’ low-carbon roadmap", says Eric Plouzennec, Equipment Performance Director at the Colas Group.
"We are delighted to launch this partnership with Colas and the Volvo Group companies. By combining our expertise, we are speeding up the decarbonization of the construction sector and supporting the energy transition of urban construction sites through innovative solutions such as mobile charging", adds Mathieu Soulas, Senior Vice President New Mobilities at TotalEnergies.
"A pioneer in electric mobility since 2019, Volvo CE is working to meet its commitment to zero-emission construction sites with new electric machinery. The EWR150 Electric excavator will be rolled out in France for the first time and will demonstrate Volvo CE’s ambition to remain at the forefront of the transformation of our industry", emphasises Davy Guillemard, President at Volvo CE France.
"Volvo Trucks is helping to transform urban construction sites with electric solutions that are already in use at Colas. By means of its synergy with Volvo CE, the Group is delivering practical solutions for the electrification of construction sites and is demonstrating its ability to roll out operational solutions on a large scale right now", concludes Laurent d’Arnal, Sales Director at Volvo Trucks France.
On the basis of the results of these trials, this low-carbon solution ecosystem will gradually be rolled out on other urban construction sites in France and internationally and will contribute to the sustainable transformation of the construction sector.
