Phase 1 of Cairo metro line 4: Colas-led consortium wins system package

Colas Rail, the railway subsidiary of Colas, as leader of a consortium with Orascom Construction and Thales, has signed a contract with Mitsubishi Corporation1 for the construction of the first phase of line 4 of the Cairo, Egypt metro. This project was awarded by the Egyptian National Authority for Tunnels (NAT). The consortium will be in charge of rail systems, track and depots for a total contract value of €650 million, of which €159 million for Colas Rail.
The new Cairo metro line 4 will connect the Hadayek El Ashgar station in 6th of October City, to the Malek El Saleh station in New Cairo. The 19-km section will include 16 stations serving the new Grand Egyptian Museum and the Gizah pyramids. Designed to facilitate travel in the area, Line 4 will be a major transport route that will provide new connections and help reduce road traffic, to the benefit of local residents and tourists, alike.
As consortium leader, Colas Rail will oversee system integration and overall coordination of the project. Colas Rail teams will also install the power supply and help build the track and signaling.
“This new contract is once again proof that the bond of trust with local authorities in Egypt is strong,” explains Hervé Le Joliff, CEO of Colas Rail. “As has been the case in the past on our projects for the Cairo Metro, Colas Rail teams are onboard to deliver a safe, reliable and fully integrated system for our longstanding partners.”
Colas Rail has been participating in the construction of the Cairo metro since 1980. The Group has already helped build Lines 1 and 2, and delivered the second phase of Line 3 last August.
