Colas is involved in the future Maternity and Children’s Ward project at the Réunion University Hospital
Through its subsidiary GTOI – Les Grands Travaux de l’Océan Indien (Major Indian Ocean Works), Colas will be involved as part of a consortium led by DEMATHIEU BARD in the construction of the future Maternity and Children’s Ward (BFPE) at the Réunion University Hospital in Saint-Denis. This project is worth nearly €140 million, of which around €50 million is for GTOI. It is due to begin in mid-2026, with commissioning scheduled for late 2029.
The Réunion University Hospital has awarded the contract for the design, construction, fitting out, upkeep and maintenance of the future BFPE to a consortium led by Demathieu Bard Construction, with GTOI (Les Grands Travaux de l’Océan Indien) as a co-contractor, along with SCAU (an architectural consultancy) and Artelia – Oasis (an engineering consultancy). Funded by the State, the Réunion Regional Authority (notably through ERDF funds) and the University Hospital, the aim of this project is to bring activities together under one roof that are currently spread across several facilities that are no longer fit for purpose.
The future BFPE will cover approximately 26,400 m² on nine floors and will accommodate more than 200 beds and spaces. It will bring together the departments dedicated to women’s health, maternity care and paediatrics: gynaecology, obstetrics, paediatrics, paediatric A&E, neonatology and critical care. The project involves up-to-date technical facilities, streamlined clinical pathways and optimised logistical, medical and patient flows, with a view to improving the coordination of patient care and comfort.
Structural work is due to begin in mid-2026, with commissioning scheduled for late 2029. Operating for many years in Réunion and, more broadly, across the Indian Ocean, GTOI will assign its teams and local partners to successfully carry out this complex hospital operation in full compliance with quality and safety standards.
"With the BFPE contract, we are putting our expertise as a construction company to work on a major project aimed at improving access to healthcare for women, parents and children in Réunion. Our teams and local partners will be fully occupied on this complex project, meeting its energy requirements and maintaining service continuity," says Jean-Christophe Deux, Chief Executive Officer of GTOI – Les Grands Travaux de l’Océan Indien.
"This project demonstrates the ability of Colas and its subsidiaries to support major public sector clients in the sustainable transformation of their infrastructure. By enhancing the provision of hospital care in Réunion, the BFPE fits in with our ambition to contribute to the sustainable development of the regions where we operate," says Thierry Meline, Executive Vice President of Colas France and Indian Ocean.
The BFPE is part of a program to modernize the North and South sites of the Réunion University Hospital. Having already been involved in several major hospital projects, notably at the Saint Pierre site, GTOI will draw on its local expertise and knowledge of the specific requirements of healthcare facilities to support the construction and operation of this new infrastructure.
