Colas has secured contract to renovate a road in Alaska

Colas, through its subsidiary Colaska, has been selected by the Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities to carry out infrastructure work in the Haines region, located in the south-east of the state. This project aims to improve the safety and accessibility of the only road serving this remote town of approximately 2,000 inhabitants. The contract is worth over €52 million.
The project will reconstruct and widen 5-miles of roadway, involves replacing 1 large bridge, installation of two 19-foot wide by 15-foot-tall debris flow culverts, excavation and backfilling work, producing aggregates and asphalt mixes, and laying them on the road.
Work began in April 2025 and will continue until October 2027. A team of 60 people will be mobilised at peak activity. In line with its environmental commitments, Colas will use recycled materials on this job and will take positive actions for the ecological restoration of the waterways crossed.
The subsidiary will also ensure the protection of migratory birds and actively contribute to the preservation of the cultural heritage of Alaska's indigenous communities.
This project, which aims to modernise the only road connecting Haines to the rest of the territory, will improve safety, facilitate trade and support the local economy by promoting job creation, training and local businesses.
"This project reflects our commitment to building safer, more accessible and sustainable infrastructure. Beyond the technical challenges, this project is a catalyst for development for the local community, both economically and culturally", explains John Harrington, Executive Vice President, Colas United States.
As Alaska's leading construction company, Colaska faces the challenges of this unique territory, subject to extreme weather conditions, on a daily basis. Through its infrastructure projects, Colas is improving mobility for local populations and strengthening the resilience of this vast Arctic state, which alone accounts for 18% of the territory of the United States.
