Colas has been awarded a major contract for the construction of additional lanes on the Interstate 10 highway in California
Sully-Miller Contracting Co., an American subsidiary of Colas, has been awarded a contract by the San Bernardino County Transportation Authority (SBCTA) to construct new express lanes, and improve freight and vehicle lanes on Interstate 10 (I-10) in San Bernardino County, California, worth approximately €264 million.
This project covers approximately 6.2 miles (10,4 km), crossing the cities of Ontario, Fontana and Bloomington. Its aim is to improve traffic flows, enhance the corridor's logistics performance and support regional economic development. The works, which will run from April 2026 to fall 2029, will create an additional expressway in each direction on the I-10 section between the I-10 at Pepper Avenue - I-15 (Interstate 15) interchange, with two-way toll facilities. To integrate these new lanes, the Sully-Miller teams will widen the existing roads and several bridges, and will adapt the access ramps, highway connections and the relevant major engineering structures.
For example, five expressway access points will be improved with additional auxiliary lanes or acceleration lane extensions: three in the westbound direction and two in the eastbound direction to improve safety. Two intermediate access points will also be configured in each direction as combined entry/exit points, while a specific access point located east of the I-15 will only allow entry in a westbound direction.
Redevelopment of existing entry and exit points will ensure service continuity and optimized traffic flow management. The project is jointly funded by San Bernardino County and from state and federal transport budgets.
"We are very proud to be a trusted partner of the local transport authorities in California and to be involved in this large-scale infrastructure project for San Bernardino County on Interstate 10", says John Harrington, Executive Vice President, United States.
"This major new project is part of the Colas Group's strategy to expand in the market for large, complex projects in the United States. This is a fine example of what our teams can offer our customers in terms of expertise, responsiveness and technical skill", adds Pierre Vanstoflegatte, Chief Executive Officer of the Colas Group.
This new contract is in line with the ongoing operations of Colas and its subsidiaries in the US transport infrastructure market, particularly in California, where the Group regularly works on major highway projects (works for the California Department of Transportation, local counties and municipalities).
