Helicopters and a train for the Grand Port Maritime of Dunkerque

Dunkerque, France’s third largest port, is significantly enhancing its solid bulk storage facilities (for coal, ores, wood, scrap metal, etc.) in tall stacks. In the context of this project the Colas Dunkerque agency was responsible, on behalf of the GPMD, for the renovation of a 23,500 m² Multibulk platform.

Thanks to the partnership between design office, technical department and operation it was possible to propose attractive technical solutions based on the NOVAFOR technique for recycling existing materials.

As a result, three courses were processed using the NOVAFOR technique over a total depth of 80 cm:

  • 2 x 25 cm treated with on-site materials, with the aim of obtaining T1 performance levels,
  • a upper course composed of 0/14 gravel treated with 8% hydraulic binder, with the aim of obtaining a class 4 compacted concrete pavement.

These techniques were implemented using a WIRTGEN2500 SK cold recycler, providing in-situ retread quality to R1 level.

The NOVAFOR technique enabled us to meet our client’s strict time schedule (2 months). An optimal result of 23,500 m² in 6 days was achieved. Horizontal surfacing was performed by helicopter, followed by application of a curing product and finally cutting into 10 m x 10 m slabs to control cracking.

The final structure can withstand the static load of a 15 m stack of bulk material and passage of a 390-tonne crane (load during lifting: 460 tonnes).

The resistance of the structure was checked by the CST Centre for Expertise and Documentation, by means of finite-element calculations using ABAQUS software.

A fine success story for Colas Nord Picardie, which will no doubt lead to further challenging contracts from the Grand Port Maritime de Dunkerque.
